Pet Transfusion Therapy in Boerne, TX

At Hill Country Animal Emergency Hospital, we pride ourselves on having top-of-the-line equipment to help your pet with transfusions. We can provide not only the basic fluids to help with hydration but also continuous infusions of medicine, blood and blood products, and antivenom to help with any emergency that walks in the door.

Pet Transfusion Therapy

Blood transfusions are frequently used to treat acute or chronic anemias, as well as acute hemolysis or bleeding. Whole blood, red cells, plasma, or platelets must frequently be transfused into animals suffering from hemostatic diseases. Blood transfusions must be administered with caution because they can worsen the recipient’s condition. Adults in good health who are taking the proper medications to avoid parasitic infections like heartworm or other diseases spread by vectors should donate blood.

Donors should not have previously received blood transfusions, and in some cases, they should not have been pregnant. Dog donors should be tested for DEA 1; those who test positive should only be used for recipients who also test positive.

Donors and recipients in species containing chemicals should be typed to ensure compatibility and reduce the risk of sensitization. Even for the first transfusion, any cat should have a significant crossmatch performed prior to transfusion. The same is true for dogs who have previously been transfused. Rather than a specific Hct, the decision to transfuse RBCs should be based on the patient’s clinical symptoms.
